Different Types of Teas for Different Needs

Next to water, tea is the most widely consumed beverage and one of the healthiest drinks in the world.  It was originally used as a medicinal drink in Southwest China and eventually became a recreational drink during the Chinese Tang dynasty.

In the recent years, drinking tea has received a lot of positive attention and has become so popular not just in Asia but all over the world.

There are different kinds of tea with different healing and medicinal properties, and can also be prepared in a number of ways.

To choose which type of tea best suits your needs, here are different types of teas for different needs.

For weight loss:  Green, White and Rooibos Tea

Nope, not those skinny detox teas you see all over Instagram.  Green Tea contains catechins (a type of antioxidant) and caffeine that will speed up your metabolism and promote weight loss, while White Tea blocks the formation of new fat cells. Rooibos Tea on the other hand is the perfect drink to sip in if you want to suppress hunger because it contains aspalathin, a compound that reduces stress hormones that trigger hunger and fat storage.

For an energy boost:  Black Tea

Forget about coffee or those fancy energy drinks, to get your much-needed energy boost, make sure to start your day and/or your afternoon with a cup of black tea.  Unlike coffee, the caffeine in black tea is just enough to increase energy and improve mental focus and concentration, which limits the possibility of over-stimulating the heart.  It also contains guanine and xanthine, which are natural stimulants.  There are many varieties of black tea, some popular ones are Earl Grey and English Breakfast.

To relax and induce sleep:  Chamomile, Valerian and Lavender Tea

Herbal teas are beverages made from the infusion of herbs, spices, fruits and other plant materials in hot water.  Chamomile, Valerian and Lavender are popular herbs that promote relaxation and induce sleep, therefore, these types of teas are best to drink before bedtime.

For clearer skin: Yerba Mate, Rooibos and Green Tea

If you want to keep your skin looking youthful and free from acne and other skin problems, make sure to include these drinks in your “beauty regimen.”  Yerba Mate, Rooibos and Green Teas are all packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce acne, protect your skin from sunburn, promote hydration and overall, reduce the signs of aging.

Now go and stock up your pantry with these healthy teas!
