Tips to Prevent Obesity in Children

The number of children who are overweight and obese has been rapidly increasing and it’s a serious issue that parents should not ignore.  You see, obesity is dangerous for your child’s physical, mental and emotional health.  Obese children can develop Type 2 Diabetes, Heart Problems, Bone and Joint Pain, Liver Diseases, Sleep Apnea and Asthma.  Most children who are overweight have low self-esteem, depressed and are more likely to develop other mental health problems such as eating disorders and substance abuse in the future.

If you are concerned about your child’s health or is just looking for ways to maintain your child’s healthy weight, here are 5 tips for you.

1. Be an example.

First of all, you cannot implement a healthy lifestyle if you, yourself do not practice that.  Make sure that you lead by example because your kids look up to you.  Practice what you preach and lead your child towards a healthier direction.

2. Let your kids understand the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

More importantly, you should explain to your children and make them understand the benefits of having a healthy lifestyle so that they will be motivated to stay healthy.  Also, don’t forget to inform them of the different consequences if they don’t follow healthy habits and practices.

3. Make healthier food choices.

Most likely, as a parent, you are the one who does the food shopping and probably the food preparation.  So choose healthier food options – plenty of vegetables and fruits, lean meats, fish, poultry and whole-grain products.  Serve reasonably sized portions and encourage your child to drink lots of water.  Don’t stock your pantry and fridge with unhealthy snacks.

4. Implement healthy eating habits.

Kids always ask for junk food, sweets and fast food and that’s hard to resist.  You don’t need to totally deprive them of that but don’t make it a habit.  Encourage your child to develop a healthy attitude towards food because eventually they will be the ones who will resist unhealthy food.

5. Get active with your kids.

Like adults, an active lifestyle is very beneficial to the health.  If your kid is not into sports, encourage your child to join you in doing physical activities such as brisk walking, swimming, dancing or biking.  Any type of activity as long as your child gets at least 60 minutes of exercise every day.
