4 Common Signs That You Could be Low in Zinc

Z-I-N-C – I’m sure you’ve heard this before, but haven’t really bothered to know what it does for your health.  Zinc is one of the minerals that are often overlooked because only a very small amount is necessary for bodily functioning.

Men only need to consume 11 mg of zinc per day while women need 8 mg.  We only need so little of it, but it’s very important to get enough because it doesn’t take a mild zinc deficiency to cause a variety of extreme symptoms.

Zinc is a lot more common than we think so let me share with you a few signs that your body is telling you to boost your zinc intake.

1. You’re always ill.

Do you catch colds or get viral or bacterial infections all the time?  Zinc is crucial for the Immune System to function well, therefore, lack of impairs your immunity, making you more vulnerable to viral or bacterial infections.

2. You have acne or other skin concerns.

One of Zinc’s responsibilities is cell growth and renewal and has anti-inflammatory properties.  Studies show that zinc can help reduce the effect that bacteria have on the skin.

3. Your hair is falling out.

If you’ve been noticing more strands in your hairbrush or on your bathroom floor, well chances are, you’re a little low on zinc.  Zinc deficiency can weaken the protein structure that makes up the hair follicle, causing your hair to thin out and fall off.

4. You have trouble sleeping.

Zinc plays an important role in the production and regulation of melatonin, a hormone that controls your sleep and wake cycles.  So if you’re low in zinc, you might suffer from insomnia or sleep disturbances.

If you suspect that your body is deficient in zinc, it’s best to consult your doctor.  And always see to it that your diet is filled with zinc-rich foods such as:

  • Lamb
  • Pumpkin Seeds
  • Grass-Fed Beef
  • Chickpeas (Garbanzo Beans)
  • Cocoa Powder
  • Cashews
  • Yogurt
  • Mushrooms
  • Spinach
  • Chicken
