Beating Stress & Anxiety with Essential Oils

We’ve all had our own share of stressful situations that may have caused us major anxiety.  Some may be able to handle these situations very well, but others don’t.

If you are one of those who struggle with managing stress and anxiety, one of the many helpful reliefs is aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy is the use of essential plant oils to enhance physical or psychological well-being.  Whether it’s used with a diffuser, as massage oil or during bath, there are many ways to incorporate essential oils to your daily life.

That being said, here are the best Essential Oils to help you beat stress & anxiety.

Lavender

Lavender has long been linked to improve the nervous system for its powerful therapeutic and relaxing properties.  When you feel restless, irritable, nervous or tensed, the sweet and fresh floral scent of lavender can calm you down and provide relief.  Clinical studies and trials have even identified lavender as a treatment for anxiety and depression, together with other forms of treatment.

Bergamot

There’s just something about citrusy scents that’s so fresh and uplifting.  Bergamot is a fragrant citrus fruit, with a green color that looks like a lime.  Research shows that it can help relieve stress, anxiety, depression and even raise “good” cholesterol.  If you choose to apply the essential oil topically, make sure the area is covered and protected, as this oil is sensitive to direct sunlight.

Clary Sage

Sometimes, the stresses of life can cause someone to feel down, sad and just overall depressed.  This is when you should reach for your Clary Sage essential oil.  Aside from its soothing effect on the body and mind, studies show that it also has a hormone balancing effect that can reduce the stress hormone, while increasing mood levels, thus resulting to feelings of happiness.

Ylang Ylang

Sometimes, when you’re stressed and anxious, it’s as if your heart wants to jump out of your body, and it’s just so hard to calm down and relax no matter how many times you tell yourself to.  The Ylang Ylang essential oil can slow down a racing heart, ease fears and induce feelings of comfort.  This is perfect for people who struggle with social anxiety.  But you have to be careful if you suffer from hypotension because studies show that it can lower down blood pressure… and an abnormally low blood pressure is dangerous.

Keep in mind that these essential oils should not replace medications or therapies when managing mental health.  Make sure to check with your healthcare provider.
