Whether you’re a complete newbie in the fitness world or you’re just trying to switch your usual work out regimen and decided to hit the gym for the first time, stepping into a new territory can be pretty intimidating. Some may feel awkward, some may not know what to do or where to start. Don’t worry, that’s normal.
To help you ease into your new fitness game, here are 8 tips to help you get you fit, motivated and have a positive head start.
1. Avoid Peak Times
Who likes going to a jam-packed gym? Nobody. More so if you are a newbie. Right? You want a good start for your new fitness routine and working out in a crowded gym can make you feel awkward and unable to focus. Plus, having to wait for your turn to use an equipment can break the continuity of your workout.
2. Know What and When to Eat Before Your Workout
Don’t go to the gym hungry or too full. Eat at least 30 – 90 minutes before starting your workout. Go for a high carb (4-100 grams) meal that is low in fiber. Carbohydrates will be your source of energy while fiber can cause stomach problems during your work out. Some pre-workout meal ideas include whole wheat toast with banana and cinnamon, oatmeal and fresh fruits or a smoothie.
3. Go In with a Plan
You don’t want to wander around the gym floor, clueless. Is it for weight loss? Muscle building? Know what you want to work on before you step inside the gym.
4. Work with a Personal Trainer
The best way to start a plan is to work with the professional. You may have to pay for it but it helps a lot when you’re a newbie. This way, you’ll know which equipment to use and exercises to do according to your fitness goals.
5. Ask the Staff
Don’t be afraid to seek help and ask questions when using certain machines and equipment. It’s the best way to learn and ensure safety.
6. Keep it Hygienic
The gym is a world filled with all sorts of germs and bacteria. You’re exposed to sweat and germ-ridden gym equipment that can cause skin infections. To limit the risk, don’t forget to WASH YOUR HANDS before and after workout and SANITIZE a gym-equipment before and after use. Yes, do the next person a favor.
7. Don’t Push Yourself Too Much
Don’t get overwhelmed with your new fitness routine. Don’t push yourself to the edge because too much exercise can have negative consequences. You don’t have to workout up to 3 hours everyday! Just do enough, but not too much.
8. Keep it Fun
Last but not the least, make sure that you are enjoying. If you feel like you are getting bored or you lack motivation to go to the gym, then maybe the gym is not for you. Find a different fitness activity that is engaging and fun for you. A lot of gyms offer other classes and activities like Yoga, Dancing, Boxing… etc. Try to explore and find one that works for you.
