3 Important Aromatherapy Oils to Always Have at Home

Induces sleep, reduces anxiety, improves digestion, increases circulation and boosts energy levels – just a few of the many health benefits of Aromatherapy.  This type of complementary therapy uses plant materials and aromatic oils to alter one’s mood, cognitive, psychological or physical well-being.  For some it can be a form of alternative medicine, however, there is not enough medical evidence advice that can prove that it can prevent or cure diseases.  But that doesn’t mean that they are not legit and effective.  It’s just that each body reacts differently, you just need to pay attention to yours and use whatever that is therapeutic and effective for you.

With that being said, here are 3 recommended essential oils that everyone should have at home.

1. Lavender Oil

This classic favorite is a staple in every household.  If you had to choose only one essential oil, then you should pick this.  It has been used for thousands of years, and the most versatile out of all essential oils.

  • Induces Sleep – you can put a few drops on a cloth and tuck it under your pillow or diffuse it inside your bedroom for a good night’s sleep.
  • Soothes minor burns, insect bites and muscle/joint pain – you can apply the lavender oil topically to get these therapeutic effects.
  • Reduces Anxiety and Treats headaches/migraines – it has a calming effect that has an excellent impact on the autonomic nervous system.
  • Eliminates odor – you can add a few drops of lavender oil to your laundry’s rinse cycle to eliminate odors from socks and sweaty clothes. It’s also a great way to freshen up your living space by adding it to the water that you use when washing the floor.

Lavender oil should NEVER be ingested and pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid using this.  If you have sensitive skin, allergic reactions may occur.

2. Tea Tree Oil

Hailed as the “Jack of All Trades”, tea tree oil is said to have antifungal, antibacterial, and antiviral properties.  These days, you can see a lot of skin care products, shampoos and other personal care products to contain this essential oil.

  • Treats Acne – I myself can attest to this. You can use a cotton ball or a Q-tip to apply the tea tree oil on your problem areas to get a clearer and healthier skin.
  • Combats oily secretions on your skin – an oily skin doesn’t look good, as well as oily scalp. So use its astringent properties to alleviate oiliness on your face and add a few drops of tea tree oil on your shampoo to leave your scalp squeaky clean and oil-free all day.
  • Treats insect bites, nail fungus and Athlete’s foot – its medicinal properties can be used to treat almost any common ailment.
  • Acts as disinfectant – add this oil when cleaning your countertops, door handles and to keep fleas away.

Always test it out on your inner arm before actually applying it on your face to determine if you have any allergies to tea tree oil and always start in low concentrations.

3. Eucalyptus Oil

Love the smell of Eucalyptus – minty, woody and sweet at the same time.  The eucalyptus oil has a lot of healing properties namely:

  • Alleviates respiratory problems like colds, coughs and congestion – add this into your shower for a purifying, respiration-promoting and relaxing hot bath.
  • Eases muscle pain – the best oil to use for massage.
  • Promotes alertness – sniff on a cotton ball with eucalyptus oil for a surge of natural energy.
  • Disinfects – diffuse the oil into your home to eliminate germs and odor or add a few drops on your cleaning liquids to disinfect your kitchen, bathroom, etc.

For respiratory problems, it’s still a must to have the condition checked with the doctor especially your kids.  Never take it orally without a doctor’s supervision and like any other essential oils, pregnant and breastfeeding should avoid using this.
